Areas of Practice
Individual Therapy
Life is full of challenges and chaotic, unexpected events that can be quite impactful to daily functioning. It can be hard to meaningfully connect with others in today's fast paced, technologically reliant world, especially in Los Angeles. Traumatic experiences may cause one to withdraw and isolate from relationships and the environment. Therapy is a tool that helps when a person is feeling stuck or overwhelmed, whatever the reasons. I provide a safe space to develop an understanding of how stressors impact the mind and body, and I teach techniques that have been empirically validated to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and release trauma. My office space is also a safe and affirming place for those who identify on the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Adolescent Therapy
Life is ever changing, resulting in various repetitive patterns and cycles of growth involving comfort and stability as well as risks, disruptions, disappointments, and anxieties. It can be challenging to communicate clearly and respectfully while feeling anxious, bored, unappreciated, or having unmet needs. Children additionally often do not have the language skills to articulate their struggles, or describe how they are feeling. Therapy can help to clear up confusion, build skills and resources, and identify methods of self-care to manage stressful life occurrences.
Group Therapy
Dr. Helmke has run groups in both Los Angeles (GroupWorksWest) and San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Helmke’s groups incorporate psychoeducation, mindfulness exercises, and somatic bodywork.
